News 2010

Many congratulations to Chris Quinn (Hockley) who won the Senior Women’s Regional South Tournament at South Winchester GC on 11/12 August 2010.  Her two 78s gave her the silverware by two shots from last year’s winner.  Chris Stirling (Meon Valley) and Elaine Hutchings (Stoneham) also finished in the top ten.

Great news from Hockley.  Kate Colwill & Elizabeth Platt won the Coronation Foursomes Regional Final at East Brighton on 5 August with a superb 42 points and will go forward to the grand final at St Andrews on 20 September.  Many congratulations and the best of luck at St Andrews.

Congratulations to Raffi Dyer (Hayling) who finished 12th in the English Women’s Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Whittington Heath from 3-5 August.  Well done Raffi, a very fine performance in the top class field of this major national championship.

Congratulations to Channel Islander Olivia Jordan-Higgins (Royal Jersey) who won an all-England final in the St Andrews Junior Ladies’ Open (U23s) on 6 August, scoring a two-hole victory over the Old Course in the scratch Golf Monthly Trophy.  Olivia, 22, has recently completed her studies at Charleston Southern University and has been a winner on the US college circuit.  She was never behind in the final after taking the lead on the 2nd hole, eventually prevailing 2up after an excellent match.

Good luck to the South Region team taking part in the Vets Jamboree at Seascale GC in Cumbria from 3-5 August.  The format is foursomes and singles every day and the other teams are from the Midlands, North and Scotland.  It has proved difficult to find information about the South team, or indeed the event, but certainly Chris Stirling (Meon Valley) is taking part and we wish her and the South team good luck.

Congratulations to our Hampshire team, Olivia Jordan Higgins (Royal Jersey), Raffi Dyer (Hayling) and Katie Mundy (Dunwood Manor) on retaining the County Shield at the South Region Women’s Championships at Bush Hill Park GC, Middlesex, on 13 July 2010.  All five Hampshire players in the field qualified for the matchplay stages and Georgina Mundy (Dunwood Manor) topped the qualifyers - many congratulations Georgie – and made it through to the last eight before just losing 1 down in the quarter-finals.  In the first matchplay round in the bottom half of the draw Annabel Silk (Corhampton) just lost 2&1 to the eventual champion.  Olivia Jordan-Higgins and Katie Mundy were unfortunately drawn against each other.  Olivia won that match 2&1 before she too came up against Tara Watters, the eventual champion.  Raffi Dyer made it to the semi-finals before she also fell to Tara – on the 19th hole.  Links below to the full results sheets.

Having broken the ladies’ amateur course record at Corhampton GC on her way to becoming ladies’ champion in 2006, Annabel Silk has repeated the feat this year.  With rounds of 72 & 76 her superb golf took the trophy and lowered her own course record from 73 to 72.  Many congratulations Annabel.

Congratulations to Ryde GC on reaching the English semi-finals of the National Nines.  Ryde will play North Warwickshire in their semi at Whiteleaf GC in Buckinghamshire on 23 July, and we wish them the very best of luck for that day.
July Update:  Ryde beat North Warwickshire 2-1 to reach the final of the National Nines.  More news on that in due course – other finalist not yet known.

Special congratulations to Aileen Simpson, whose daughter Alice was born at 9.15am on Friday 2 July 2010.  Very best wishes to Charles, Aileen and Alice.

Raffi Dyer (Hayling), Olivia Jordan-Higgins (Royal Jersey) and Katie Mundy (Dunwood Manor) all qualified for the matchplay stages of the English Women’s Open Mid Amateur Championship at Bristol & Clifton GC from 1-4 July 2010.  Katie was the winner of the championship in 2009.  Unfortunately Olivia and Katie were beaten in the first matchplay round, but Raffi was just pipped on the 18th in the semi-finals.  Bad luck for that match Raffi , but v v well done on a great English championship performance.

Congratulations to Chris Quinn (Hockley).  Unfortunately Chris, who is a giant in English Senior golf having previously won one British and four English titles, was unable to play in this year’s English Senior Strokeplay Championship owing to work commitments.  However, she has been named in the England Senior team for this season’s major international events, the European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship at the Sporting Club, Berlin, from 31 August to 4 September and the Senior Home Internationals at Sheringham, Norfolk, from 28-30 September.
We wish Chris and the England team good luck in both campaigns.

Raffi Dyer won the Hayling Club Championship again on 3 June 2010 – for the fifth time with scores of 74 & 75.  Congratulations Raff.

Congratulations to Raffi Dyer (Hayling) and Katie Mundy (Dunwood Manor) on coming first and second at the prestigious 2010 Critchley Salver at Sunningdale GC on 1 June.  Raffi was three under par after the 36-hole event, and Katie was one shot behind on 146.  Great golf from two of Hampshire’s best and congratulations on winning this important event Raffi.  On 13 June Raffi had another top ten finish when she was seventh in the Pleasington Putter at Pleasington GC in Lancashire with rounds of 70 and 80.

North Hants GC held its prestigious annual Hampshire Rose Championship on 24 March.  This was the first year it has been held at a weekend and the event was oversubscribed.  Congratulations to Raffi Dyer (Hayling), who finished joint third in this quality field, and to Georgina Mundy (Dunwood Manor) who was twelfth.  Click on the link below for a copy of the press report and further results.

Olivia Jordan Higgins (Royal Jersey) won the Big South Conference championship  at Patriot, South Carolina, with a one-under par total (70 75 70) which set a new scoring record.  The Charleston Southern student was a shot off the pace at the start of the final round and secured the win with a two-under score in tough conditions.  She was one of only two players to break par in the round.  This is Olivia’s first victory in US women’s college golf although she was previously the championship runner-up in both 2008 and 2009.  Her play also helped her team to victory and to also qualify for the NCAA finals.  Wonderful golf, congratulations Olivia.

As always, this year’s Leveret Trophy on Saturday, 27 March,  at Formby GC attracted a fine entry and it was played in dry but windy conditions.  Congratulations to Raffi Dyer (Hayling GC) who finished fourth in the field with rounds of 72 & 71.

Five Hampshire clubs entered the 2010 Ladies’ London Foursomes – Army, Basingstoke, Blackmoor, Hartley Wintney and North Hants.  This prestigious event always attracts a strong field, and this year the cut came at a maximum combined handicap of 21.  It was held at The Berkshire GC from 19-21 March.  Congratulations to Basingstoke and North Hants on winning both their matches on the opening day.  Click on the link below to view/print a copy of the full draw.

Channel Islander Olivia Jordan-Higgins has claimed her fourth top-five finish of the season on the US women’s college circuit.  Our 22-year-old from Royal Jersey GC shared fourth place among 75 players in the Lady Jaguar tournament at the Forest Hills course at Augusta, Georgia.  Despite difficult conditions she had rounds of 74, 74 and 76 for a total of 224 over the par 72, 5878-yard course.  Olivia is a student at Charleston Southern University, South Carolina, and was the top scorer for her team.  Her achievements have recently been recognised with her 12th  Big South Conference Golfer of the Week award.

More brilliance from Katie Mundy this week with a win in the St Edwards Invitational at Grey Rock Golf Club, Texas, after she had been second in her previous two events.  On this occasion Katie, a Western Texas College student, came from behind to win.  Katie, who plays at Dunwood Manor, won by a shot after a splendid second round of one-under-par 70 over the 6,018yd for a 36-hole total of 148.   The college team finished second in the event.

Golly, talk about deja vu.  Well done again Katie just a week later, same feat – helping to bring your team victory again, this time by double the margin and coming a great second yourself in a strong field.

Congratulations to our English mid-amateur champion Katie Mundy (Dunwood Manor), a student at Western Texas College, on playing a key role in the team’s victory in the SNU Arizona Intercollegiate Championship.  The Lady Westerners, all Brits, were the only junior college team in the event and after the first day’s play at the Franciso Grande Resort, Casa Grande, they were seven shots off the pace.   A strong performance on the second day saw them overtake their tough opposition and eventually win the tournament by eight shots.  Katie was second in the event’s individual table and shot the low round of the second day with a two-under 70.
