2012 News

2012 saw Emma Allen (Meon Valley) at 15 win both the Junior and County Championships. This was the first time that the double had been achieved since 1970.

The second team were unbeaten in the Stovold Trophy but came second to Surrey as they had won more individual matches.

Kerry Smith (Waterloville) ended the year 10th in the England Golf Women’s Order of Merit (she topped it in 2005). That excellent placing is only achieved by a year of consistently good golf in EG qualifying events that attract some of the best golfers in the world. Kerry’s results included 4th place in the English Amateur Championship, 10th in the English Women’s Open Mid Amateur Championship, 9th in the English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship, and winning the Liphook Scratch Cup.

Chris Quinn (Hockley) won the English Women’s Senior Championship for the 4th time, and followed this with a 4th place in the British Senior Championship. She played for England in the European Senior Women’s Team Championship, and in the Senior Home Internationals getting wins in for each team.

Emma Allen ended the year in 23rd place in the England Golf Girls Order of Merit, 57th in the Women’s Order of Merit and with a place on the England Golf Select Girls Training Squad. Contributing to these Order of Merit placings were her 8th place in the Hampshire Rose, 9th in the Scottish under 16 Open Stroke Play Championship, 6th in both the Astor Trophy and Harper Salver, and 10th in the Pleasington Putter.

Other Hampshire players also performed well in national events and included: Laura & Charlotte Barrow (Brokenhurst) who won the EWGA South Region Foursomes; Raffi Dyer (Hayling) and Georgina Munday (Stoneham) who, along with Kerry Smith did well in the EWGA South Region Championships and won the team shield; Jacqui Bowden (Boscombe) was 6th in England Golf’s National Medal Finals; Jane Harfield and Chrissie Roper (Burley) reached the Daily Mail Foursomes National Finals

2012 News

Everyone will be delighted to hear that our past HLCGA Captain Diane Holt got married in November. The lucky man is Les Oram and he, of course, is also a golfer. Di and Les first met 23 years ago, but it wasn’t until he joined Basingstoke GC 7 years ago that one thing gradually led to another after they started to play golf together 2 years later. The reception was held at Basingstoke GC (where better) and then Di and Les honeymooned in Mauritius. Many congratulations to the new Mr & Mrs Oram from all in HLCGA. (Photo by Emma Powell)

Our County & Junior Champion Emma Allen (Meon Valley GC) is one of only 23 talented young players who have been selected for England Golf Select regional training squads for 2012/13. Another 62 promising girls have been selected for the Birdie training programme, which identifies potential among the country’s youngest players and three of them are from Hampshire: Bethany Goater (Hockley), Katy Mackworth-Praed (Dummer), Tara O’Herlihy (Basingstoke). Well done to all four of you on this terrific achievement – and enjoy the experience!

Eleanor Gardner of Botley Park GC ( Handicap 2) , who has played for the Hampshire first team this year, entered the Titleist Order of Merit on the How-did-I-do website and won the July monthly competition and then went on to win the overall Division 1 (0-16 Handicap) Ladies prize, which is taken over 6 months from April to September. Her best 5 scores put her above approximately 1000 participants. Everyone at Botley Park is very proud of her … as are we. Well done Elly. (Thanks to Barbara Mourant for sending us this news)

As mentioned below, Burley GC won through to the Daily Mail Foursomes National Finals. Jane Harfield from Burley wrote to tell us:

We had a fantastic time representing Burley Golf Club in the last 16 for Ladies Daily Mail Foursomes National Finals at the Forest of Arden.Unfortunately we had a tough draw and were beaten by Truro (with a British Amateur Champ!). It was a privilege to play amongst such lovely golfers, and we received an engraved silver plated jewellery box to mark the occasion. Photo is of  Chrissie Roper on the left and Jane Harfield on the right.

Phyllis Wyllie, Curtis Cup player and 4 time Hampshire Champion (as Phyllis Wade) has died aged 101. See Obituary in the Herald Scotland. (Thank you to Caroline Scallon for bringing Phyl’s Hampshire connection to our attention).

Chris Quinn (Hockley) is on England duty again this week and made a  great contribution by winning 4 of her matches in the Senior Home Internationals held at Elie & Earlsferry in Scotland. England were runners-up to Ireland. See England Golf news report for full story.

Aimee Ponte (Royal Guernsey) has won the England Golf Rose Spoon (Div 1) for August by scoring a nett 7 under standard scratch. This was off 1 handicap and so is quite an achievement.

Burley Golf Club players Jane Harfield and Chrissie Roper have made it through to the Ladies Daily Mail Foursomes National Finals at The Forest of Arden Golf & Country Club, taking place 14th to 16th October. They had to beat  Boscombe Ladies, Crane Valley, Parkstone, High Post, Christchurch and Botley Park to get there. Best of luck, we’ll all be cheering for you! (Thanks to Jane Harfield for sending us the news).

Another great result from Chris Quinn (Hockley) who came 4th in the British Senior Championship at Hunstanton. She shot 236 (79 80 77) and came first in her age-group. Well done Chris.

Kerry with the Captain of Liphook Golf Club, Mr. Peter Mobsby.

Congratulations to Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) who won the Liphook Scratch Cup by 5 shots on the 15th September. Her second round 71 was the only score under par of the day. This is a terrific result in an England Golf order of merit competition. 3 of our juniors also did well. Aimee Ponte (Royal Guernsey) finished in 8th place with Charlotte Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor) and Rosie Mist (Hayling) not far behind in 12th and 13th.

Kerry Smith (Waterloville) and Raffi Dyer (Hayling) both performed well in the English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Little Aston Golf Club in Staffordshire. Kerry finished tied for 9th place with Raffi tied for 19th. Great result.

16 year old Rosie Mist has just had the best preparation possible for her place in the Hampshire team for Junior County Match Week (at Basingstoke GC from 13 August). She won Hayling Ladies’ Golf Club Gold Medal on 2 August, to become Ladies’ Club Champion. Rosie tied with past County Championship runner-up, and 4 time Hayling Club Champion Raffi Dyer and so they went on to play a sudden death playoff after 36 holes on the one day, and Rosie won on the 1st hole. She also reduced her handicap from 9 to 7. What a day and what an achievement for Rosie.

It was a double family celebration as her older brother Jamie had already won the men’s Gold Medal on 16/17 June.  (Thanks to Heather Parham from Hayling GC for passing on this news and photo)

Two Hampshire players have done well in the English Women’s Open Mid Amateur Championship played at Wetherby GC. Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) came 10th with 150 which was exactly on CSS for the 36 holes. Raffi Dyer (Hayling) was 18th with 153. Two terrific scores in a very strong field. The format of the Championship was changed after the two qualifying rounds to 36 hole strokeplay instead of matchplay as there had been significant delays due to the weather.

Another great result from Emma Allen (Meon Valley) who came 10th in the Pleasington Putter (an Order of Merit competition). She shot a 3 over CSS 155 in this 36 hole scratch competition.

Well done to Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) who qualified for the matchplay phase of the British Open Amateur Championship at Carnoustie GC after 36 hole qualifying competition. This is a great achievement as the international field is very strong. Only 15 English golfers qualified for one of the 64 places available. Unfortunately Kerry was knocked out in the first round, beaten by Perrine Delacourof France who is ranked 25 in the world.

Well done to two of our Juniors who played well in the Harper Salver (West of England Amateur Open Ladies’ Championship). Emma Allen (Meon Valley) was 6th with 154 (CSS 150) in this 36 hole championship,  and Paige Harrison (Lee-on-the-Solent) won the 2nd net prize with 148 net.

Jacqui Bowden (Boscombe Ladies) was 6th in England Golf’s Grand Medal Final. Well done Jacqui for a great result. See England Golf News Item for more information.

Congratulations to our County and Junior Champion Emma Allen (Meon Valley) who came 6th in the Astor Trophy with a 1 over scratch 146 in this 36 hole, Order of Merit ranking competition run at The Berkshire. Fantastic result Emma.

Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) also did well finishing in 11th place with 148. The valuable points have moved Kerry to 8th place in the Order of Merit. Terrific achievement.

Kerry Smith finishes 4th in the English Amateur Championship – Kerry (Waterlooville) shot 309 (9 over) after 4 rounds of strokeplay to finish in 4th place. The competition was held at Royal Birkdale with a top class field and so this is a wonderful result. Well done Kerry. Hampshire is proud of you.

Another Hampshire golfer is off to the Grand Medal finals with the 5 who qualified in the South Region Qualifier. Jacqui Bowden (Boscombe) qualified in 6th place at Royal North Devon in the South West Regional Qualifiers. Well done Jacqui and good luck to you and all the Hampshire 6!

Many Congratulations to Helen Wheeler (Hockley) a past County Champion who married fellow Hockley golfer Robert Bailey in April.

Her friend Judie Lewis (Hockley) tells us: “My husband Anthony and I picked them up at the Hotel du Vin (where they had spent the previous night) in our vintage Rolls Royce, which was a complete surprise for them! We took them to the registry office in Winchester for 3pm and after a lovely service took them to the St. James’s tavern in Winchester for the reception where they held a tea and cake (and drinks!) reception for the family and immediate friends, then at 5.30 more people arrived for supper and more people after that for more drinks! It was a really good day and Helen looked radiant and Robert very pleased with himself!!! ”
Sounds like a great day and everyone in HLCGA wishes the new Mr & Mrs Bailey every happiness.

Chris Quinn (Hockley) has won the English women’s senior championship for the fourth time. The final included some fantastic golf from both players. See England Golf’s news item for a report. Congratulations Chris on this excellent win.

The championship was held at Tidworth Garrison GC and was well supported by Hampshire golfers. Unfortunately the second day of the 36 hole qualifying rounds was cancelled because of bad weather and so the 32 qualifiers were decided on results of the first 18 holes. The top 16 qualify for the Championship Match Play and included Elaine Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor) who was the highest placed (6th) Hampshire golfer in qualifying, Joan Pullen (Basingstoke), Chris Quinn (Hockley), and Jane Bennett (Lee-on-the Solent). Those who finished in 17th to 32nd place enter the “Flight 2″ Match Play and include our County Captain Jane Shergold (Blackmoor) and Judie Lewis (Hockley). Given the qualty of the field qualification is a terrific achievement. Unfortunately Chris was the only Hampshire player to survive the first round of match play (and she did so by beating fellow Hampshire player Elaine), but our girls all went out fighting with some very close matches. Well done everyone.

Elaine and Charlotte Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor) came 3rd in the Mothers and Daughters Competition at Royal Mid-Surrey GC which they entered as current holders. One shot behind them were Jane and Becky Scott (County Champion 2011) from Alresford. This competition attracts a very strong field so our Hampshire golfing families did very well.

Our Junior Champion, Emma Allen (Meon Valley), finished in 9th place in the Scottish Under 16 Open Stroke Play Championship 2012 held at Strathmore Golf Centre in Perthshire. She shot a 7 over par 151 for the 36 holes of strokeplay. Well done Emma that was a great result.

Hampshire golfers have done very well in the South Region Qualifier held at Highgate GC in Middlesex for England Golf’s Grand Medal Final. Out of 10 qualifiers there are 5 from Hampshire, including the winner, Caroline Pinder (Gosport & Stokes Bay) who played 4 under CSS to win by two shots. Great result Caroline! The other Hampshire qualifiers are Caroline Roadnight (Waterlooville), Carol Bradshaw (South Winchester), Niki Orchard (Hartley Wintney), Karen Webb (Southwood). Well done everyone. We’ll all be rooting for you on the 23rd June when you play at Worcestershire Golf Club in the Grand Final – Good Luck!

The Hampshire Rose is an England Golf Order of Merit competition run by North Hants GC. It attracts a strong field including several of our Hampshire golfers. Congratulations go to Emma Allen from Meon Valley (our new Junior Champion) who finished in 8th place with 150 which equalled the CSS. Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) and Georgie Mundy (Dunwood Manor) also did well, finishing in the top 20. Full results can be seen here Hampshire Rose Results 2012

A huge thank you to the ladies of Hockley GC who are fund raising for Hampshire Juniors. Hockley Captain Kay Walshe presented a cheque for £500 to Elaine Barrow, CJO at the Junior Championship when it was held at Hockley in April.

All who knew her were sorry to learn of the death of Pat Pearse on Saturday, 17 March 2012.  Pat played at Stoneham GC and she was a lifelong servant and supporter of Hampshire ladies’ golf.  She first played county golf in 1952 and was awarded her county colours.  Pat also served as 2nd Team Captain and Hon Secretary of the HLCGA.

Huge congratulations to three of our Juniors – Charlotte Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor),  Emma Allen (Meon Valley) and Emma Higgins (Highcliffe Castle) who have all been selected for EWGA 2012/13 Training Squads. This is a terrific achievement. Well done girls, and enjoy the experience.
