News 2011

Congratulations to Judie Lewis (Hockley) who has been crowned the individual champion of the hugely successful second English Women’s Golf La Manga Club Challenge.  Her win was recognised at the gala dinner, when the other prizewinners were also honoured.  Judie won the 36-hole individual Stableford with a total of 63 points after two steady rounds on the North course. She was two points clear of last year’s winner, Carol Duncumb (Rothley Park) and Diane Pickersgill (Shooters Hill), and won a 500-euro holiday voucher for the La Manga Club.  Well done Judie.

There were quite a few from Hampshire players in this year’s Elizabeth Price Open Mixed Foursomes at Hankley Common GC, a 36-hole scratch medal.   Helen and David Wheeler and Chris and Kevin Quinn went home with prizes, and the event was won by Brokenhurst Manor’s Laura Barrow and Dan Cobb on Saturday 10th September with scores of 75 and 80, to take the trophy by one shot.  Very well played both, and many congratulations.

Very very well done, Chris Fisher & Debbie Brown (Sherfield Oaks), who came second in the grand final of the 2011 Ping Fourball Better Ball Grand Final at Gainsborough GC.  They were just pipped on countback with a really excellent 40 points on a day of very strong winds and difficult conditions.  Congratulations girls.

Congratulations to Elaine Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor) who came third in the Senior Women’s Southern Regional Tournament at Hendon GC on 11/12 August.  Well played Elaine.

Raffi Dyer (Hayling) and Georgie & Katie Mundy (Dunwood Manor) all qualified for the final 36 holes of the English Women’s Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship in August at Alwoodley GC in Leeds.  Georgie finished this top quality event in 20th spot, and Katie and Raffi tied 33rd.
Diane Holt was pleased to announce at the HLCGA Committee Meeting on 15 July 2011 that Margaret Clark (Shanklin & Sandown) will be the incoming Vice Captain following the AGM in November.  Congratulations Mags on your appointment.

Congratulations to Joan Pullen (Basingstoke) on finishing second, just one stroke behind the winner, in the 36-hole English senior women’s Midlands regional tournament at Brocton Hall GC in Staffordshire on 8 July.  This was a great result at Joan’s first foray into regional seniors events.  Very well done Joan.  We do have spies everywhere, but give us a clue when you might be hiding your successes in other regions!

Well done South Winchester’s Lorraine Morgan on your prizewinning success at the EWGA Grand Medal Final at Droitwich GC on 25 June 2011.  It was the first time Lorraine had qualified for the EWGA Grand Medal Final, and her excellent nett 73 ensured she did not go home empty handed.  To qualify for the Grand Final, Lorraine had of course been her club medal winner and then won through to Droitwich via the South Region Medal Finals at Petersfield GC in April.  It’s a long route to the Grand Final prizetable – many congratulations Lorraine on your year’s fine golf.

(Hockley) who won this year’s Senior English Strokeplay Championship by seven shots having led the field from the first round and extending her lead every day.  Great golf , Chris.  Elaine Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor) also qualified for the final round of the Championship, and Chris & Elaine brought the County Team Trophy back to Hampshire.  Further information and full scores available on the EWGA website.

Congratulations to Liz Borrow (Corhampton), Lorraine Morgan (South Winchester) and Teresa Paffet (Portsmouth) on reaching the 2011 Volvo EWGA Grand Medal Final which will be hosted by Droitwich GC in Worcestershire on Saturday, 25 June.  Liz, Lorraine and Teresa all qualified for the Grand Final via the South Region finals at Petersfield GC on Wednesday, 13 April, where they all played excellent golf.  Liz and Lorraine matched the competition CSS of 73, and Teresa came in with a nett 74.  Very well done all, and the best of luck at Droitwich in June.

The first Hampshire players’ success of the season came on 9 April when Elaine and Charlotte Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor) won the very popular Mothers & Daughters competition at Royal Mid Surrey GC.  Mothers & daughters come from all over the country to play in this prestigious annual 27-hole scratch foursomes competition.  Many congratulations to you both on such a fine win.
